Arches of leaves & air

Arches of leaves & air
& the soft orange light of evening

The town drowns itself
in the languorous hollow of silence

Children gambol in the green green park
crossing frontiers of age & blood

Women knit the frozen pastorale of centuries
lice & lotus in their thinning flow of hair

Men swig absinthe of their black young days
sleeping with women dreaming of skies, serpents

Soldiers dodder at the center of fallen gardens
pick teeth, rotting animals, battered bells

Violently, we close our eyes
Collect the wreckage of our hearts

& without warning—
as if throwing caution to the wind—
Sing all the “sad sad songs of evening.”

(O Everywhere, beloved, prairies & towers burn!)
