Mourners

They crawl like squalid ants
toward the cemetery gates
& into spaces of weeds & bugs
for the autumnal taps
to their own kind
who never had the capital
to keep their kinsmen
grieving & loyal:
Did the heavens record
their dead’s departure & arrival,
who passed their time
like insects with high-pitched buzz…

Always the dead bury the dead.
